A Short Photographic Tour of the
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

                       Photography by John Horm
Perhaps best known for the wild ponies, Chincoteague also has many migratory waterfowl.
There is a large deer herd that comes out of hiding in the evening to feed.
And of course the ponies.
The birds are cattle egret that hitch rides on the ponies.
There are other forms of wildlife as well. See the crab?
These are only a few of the several hundred photos I took during a recent two day visit.
This small sampling of photos is intended to give you a feel for Chincoteague and its wildlife inhabitants. For humans, the preferred mode of transportation on the island is a bicycle. If you don't have your own, there are a number of rental shops just outside the refuge.

Equipment: Nikon D1x, 80-400 VR lens, 24-120 lens, SB-28 flash, 1.4 converter.
All photos were handheld - I haven't figured out how to carry a tripod on my bike.

Note: All photos have been reduced in size and highly compressed.
